STATEMENT

Coming from the French education system, I have spent extended time in Paris, France living and learning the local culture. While there are many beautiful gothic architectural structures in Paris, I was always drawn to the beauty and mystique of the Notre Dame Cathedral. As a place of worship, it exuded peace and tranquillity and welcomed diverse worshippers from around the globe. Ironically, I was one of the last 100 people in the building before it was engulfed in flames. As we stood before the Sacre Coeur, the only hill in Paris, and observed the fire, I sketched my immediate sadness in a notebook and later painted this portrait that was a historical moment in time. Leaving a lasting impression on me, routinely I reflect on designing buildings that stand the test of time and leave a lasting impression on people.

When thinking about buildings and their effect on people, I can’t help but feel the love that is the foundation of the Taj Mahal in India. As I contemplate the many environmental challenges we currently face, it is poignant to note that the Taj Mahal has withstood earthquakes and floods. Wanting to see this structure that ranks as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, it will help me articulate the 21st Century designs I want to create that will one day be written in history books. Thus, my past experiences in France and my future travels to visit iconic structures inspire me to continue the quest of architectural design using modern solutions.

My intention is not to build that next big cathedral but a structure that goes down in history as a testament to our circumstances and how we survived. Thus, I am excited to study at the University of Manchester as a unique opportunity to develop my critical thinking, creativity, and confidence while enjoying practical learning. The customised training and hands-on interactions will give me the chance to be more versatile both in the implications of an engaging and challenging learning experience and in the pragmatic expectations to pursue my intellectual interest in academia while being surrounded by the like-minded to interpret knowledge into building today’s dreams on tomorrow’s world. It is an ecosystem, where I will help impede the process of global warming as wildfires, superstorms, droughts, floods, and mass extinction continue to increase. As a future architect, my futuristic designs will be a blueprint for refuge as we confront this sci-fi apocalypse. The University of Manchester is where I will be an active participant I will partake in a cross-disciplinary approach to address this global climate emergency and design structures that are green, equitable and environmentally kind.

My two faces-2021

Two A3 papers with watercolour

The two auto-portraits are symbolic for me. The first one is who I truly am in my roots and nature, it's my personal connection to nature, with no exposure to the real world. The naive look, the small and round puppy eyes Auto-portrait and the freckles are all parts of my true identity. The second one is the version of me which is demanded by society. The fakeness, the plastic surgery, the bruises and the extreme makeup are nothing of my true self, it's only a representation of social standards. The golden chain necklace represents the concept of gifting women's jewellery on most occasions. It is also a way of saying that by giving them jewellery; we hold them down and chain them to gender roles found in society. The lead that hangs off the main neck chain is how women are led like animals in Turkish society and much of the world.

Series of whales-2022

35 ×50 cm craft paper with dry paint

Acknowledging the importance of whales in our ecosystem and the food chain is our duty to amplify their presence and educate the public on the role of the whales. Knowing that whales capture carbon from the atmosphere and hold an estimated 3 tons of CO2 they assume their natural role to fight climate change. Are you playing your role?

Stairs of Musée du Louvre Stairs (Upward Journey)-2020

Artliner and marker on sketchbook
A4 (21,0 × 29,7cm, 90 g/m)

Spending an exchange year in France, I was in awe of the cultural beauty of the Louvre Museum that draws millions of international tourists each year. Taking a photo of the stairs and sketching them caused me to think about how they are an upward journey on metaphorical ground. This period as an exchange student was an upward journey of my own.

Upcycling Seating Unit Idea Sketches-2022

Glass stool filled and chair completed with electronic devices-2022

30 x 30× 35 cm, 4mm glass rectangular prism with acrylic painting

Wood chair paired with electronic wastes

Waste from electronic devices caused by the never-ending development of technology can be a significant contributor to the overall amount of waste generated in a city. I made this upcycled chair with electronic devices giving them a new lease on life and others a place to sit. In order to create the glass stool I also used recycled items. "Think then sit, " is written on it to remind the user to take timeout and think. The most important takeaway is that before collective action we must assume personal responsibility.

Golden ratio pavilion-2022

A3 size craft paper sketches

Chopsticks placed on a 30 x 30 cm foam board

As I studied the golden ratio and how it was used in Ancient Greek architecture, I wanted to create a 2ist Century design that reflects ancient principles and keeps up with current trends. I made my structure with chopsticks on a foam board that highlights the importance of shelter.

Architectural structure-2022

3D modelled and rendered open architectural structure inspired by refugee roads map

Refugees inspired by the worldwide human migration map and how climate change will continue to cause people to migrate and need housing. If humanity thought the war was a problem, they can't imagine what climate catastrophe will do.
