STATEMENT C oming from the French education system, I have spent extended time in Paris, France living and learning the local culture. While there are many beautiful gothic architectural structures in Paris, I was always drawn to the beauty and mystique of the Notre Dame Cathedral. As a place of worship, it exuded peace and tranquillity and welcomed diverse worshippers from around the globe. Ironically, I was one of the last 100 people in the building before it was engulfed in flames. As we stood before the Sacre Coeur, the only hill in Paris, and observed the fire, I sketched my immediate sadness in a notebook and later painted this portrait that was a historical moment in time. Leaving a lasting impression on me, routinely I reflect on designing buildings that stand the test of time and leave a lasting impression on people.
